In this master’s thesis,I want to explore how the picture book can function as a door opener to conversations. I will to take a closer look at picture books with controversial topics, and how they can be used in conversations in the classroom. The picture books I have chosen for this thesis arenamed Dragenand Krigen, and are authored by Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus and Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus. Both picture books focuson controversial topics: Neglect and divorce. They are both presenting families in crisis.I want to explore how these books can contribute in conversations with children. The issue is therefore as follows: How can picture books with controversial topics be used in conversations in the classroom? In the theoretical part, the main emphasis is on conversations with children, the picture book as a composite text and what makes the picture book mediumso genuine. The relationship between the reader and the text is also illuminated. The thesis consists of analyses of the two picture books focusing on act, the correlation between words and pictures and their topics. Furthermore, the use of methods arepresented, where hermeneutics, analysesand planning of two teaching sessions, have the main role. Finally, the conduction of the two teaching sessions will be presented. In this regard,I will highlight interesting findings and questions. These are included further in the discussion. In the discussion, several questions will be discussed and answered. Together this will lead towards a conclusion on my final issue.
