Sammendrag
This master thesis presentsaqualitative case study whichexplore year 2 students work with problem solving tasks, in a semiotic perspective. In the study, three small groups were observed while working with problem solving tasks. The aim of the observations where to getaninsight into which semiotic resources the students used while working onthe problem solving tasks. Video recordings from the observations make up the empirical data material of this study. This study is placed in the socio-cultural learning perspective. The aim of this study is to explore which semiotic resources the students use while working onproblem solving tasks. The findings of this study are largely based on theanalysis of semiotic mediation and semiotic bundles of the students’semiotic resources. These analyses are based on the theoretical framework, which focuses on semiotic mediation and semiotic bundle as tools for analysis. Findings impliedthat the students used the same semiotic resources while working onproblem solving tasks. The semiotic resources were used similarly by the studentsin this study. These findings contributed to the analysis of five semiotic resources. Through detailed analysis of the students and the small groupsusesofthesesemiotic resources it became clear that the students had different outcome fromtheir use ofthe semiotic resources. These outcomes varied dependent on how the students used and defined the attributes of the artifacts they used. The students’definition of the artifact’s attributes impacted how the students mediated their solutions tothe problem solving task. Keywords: Semiotic mediation. Semiotic bundle. Semiotic resources. Mediation Problem solving tasks. Year 2 students
