Sammendrag
This is a research projectonteachers use of resources in algebra. Algebra is a large subject, and I have therefore decidedto focus on algebraic expressionsandhow the teacher introduces this subjectto their students. The term resource is a broad concept, and I have therefore chosen to clarify both the human and material resources being used by the teachers while tutoring.The research question I want to answer is: What resources do three teachers put into use in tasks concerningthe teaching of algebrain 8thgrade, and how do they use these resources? To answerthis, I have collecteddata materials based on three teachers. I have completed a semi-structuredinterview with each one of the teachers, where the teachers in advancereceivedaninterview guide. This way, the teachers could preparethemselves and arrangeresources todiscuss inthe interview. I based my thesis around Adler ́s work. In Adler (2000), she defines different resource types: human, cultural and material resources. Further in Adler (2012), she described human resources as knowledge resources. The knowledge resources are my analyticsin this task, and thus play a huge role in theanalysis of my data material. Every teacher is represented with the help of the knowledge resources in the result chapter. Other theorieswhich are relevant are: the teachers use of the textbook (Brown, 2009), resources used to adjust teaching (Klette, 2007;Nosrati & Wæge, 2015), the teachers understanding in mathematics (Skemp, 1976) and regular misconceptionsin algebra (Brekke, 2000;Knuth, Alibali, McNeil, Weinberg & Madison, 2005). By analyzing the use of resources among the three teachers I found thattheuse of the curriculum, the textbook, digital resources, manipulativesand using the students as resources for each other where the resources most commonly used. Although the three teachers use the same resources,theyuse the resources differentlyand they rely on different knowledge resources.
