dc.description.abstractThis master’s thesis explores how building materials such as Cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (glulam) can be used as alternative building materials to traditional steel-sandwich panel in industrial buildings. This study addresses the primary research question and its sub-questions through a comparative analysis on subject like CO2-emissions, material cost, construction time and reuse potential. This study uses a combination of literature review, case study analysis, comparative data evaluation, and semi-structured interviews with industry specialists in CLT, glulam and steel construction. FEM-design was used for structural design of two designs using CLT and glulam for integrity and utilization evaluation purposes. CO2-emissions were assessed using One Click LCA. Cost and time analysis were conducted using interview information and material data provided. Information about reuse of the different building types were conducted using literature and interview insights. Key finding in this master thesis was buildings constructed with CLT, and glulam have significantly lower CO2-emissions compared to the case building built out of steel-sandwich. CLT and glulam design showed approximately 58,6 % lower CO2-emissions compared to steel-sandwich warehouse building. The cost analysis revealed that material cost of CLT and glulam can be more expensive compared to steel-sandwich. On the other hand, CLT and glulam provide faster construction time compared to steel-sandwich construction, about 46 % reduced construction time, this can reduce the total cost of a project. CLT, glulam and steel have all good potential for reuse. CLT and glulam are easy to dismantle and repurpose with simple tools, whilst steel can be efficiently reused if they are mechanically fastened instead of welded. The study shows that CLT and glulam represent sustainable, cost and time-effective alternatives to steel-sandwich panel type industrial buildings. The use of CLT and glulam also promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly construction industry.
