This master thesis was written as a part of master program for civil structure engineering BYG508. The purpose of this of study is to highlight and investigate the implementation of 4D-BIM for entrepreneurs. The research question was sub-divided in 3 parts in order to provide a better understanding of the research question and assist in answering the main research question. Relevant theory background was research to provide a more thorough insight on the research question and to provide the necessary theoretical supplement connecting to planning, communication, BIM and 4D-BIM. The methodology chosen for this report is qualitative based on preparing interview questions related to implementation of 4D-BIM, which was distributed among relevant interview candidate from different companies. There were held 6 digital surveys and 5 face-to-face interviews with the candidates. Additionally, real-life cases were selected to provide a realistic relevance of research question to real-life project. These cases along with the interview responses from the chosen candidates were used to lay the foundation of the results in this report and discuss the research question. In total, 6 cases were chosen in the report, from which, one of the cases was the reference case that implemented BIM in a real-life project in Norway. The rest of the 5 cases were based on implementation of 4D-BIM in various building processes and stages. Conclusively, for implementation of 4D-BIM, it is important to analyze the possibilities, limitations and cost factors. The construction field is conservative concerning the implementation of 4D-BIM and much of that stems from lack of basic understanding of 4D-BIM, high investment cost and necessary tools that are required. A good assessment of 4D-BIM implementation will provide the companies a better understanding of operational and economical aspects related to 4D-BIM implementation. External factors such as demanding implementation of 4D-BIM in contract establishing phase, ensure that the contractors have necessary knowledge and tools for 4D-BIM is also crucial.
