| dc.description.abstract | This thesis is an investigation of how The Stormlight Archive, written by American author Brandon Sanderson, is a high fantasy work that contributes to postcolonial discourse. This thesis proves how Sanderson as a contemporary high fantasy author, challenges traditional ideas of binary opposites between good and evil. The character in focus in this thesis is Dalinar Kholin, one of the main protagonists in the narrative. The study shows how he connects to the postcolonial theoretical field, by applying central postcolonial ideas such as othering and hybridity in the Third Space. His character arc is one that inspires hope in dealing with postcolonial struggles, and he represents the opportunity for redemption of a colonial past. Furthermore, as he struggles to reconcile with his brutal past, the narrative highlights the importance of looking back in order to move forward. As The Stormlight Archive is a series yet to be concluded, this thesis offers some possible outcomes to the narrative, that would further highlight the postcolonial ideas presented in the plot. | |
