Masteroppgaven undersøker fenomener og utfordringer i kommunikasjon mellom utstillingskuratorer og samtidskunstnere. Problemformuleringen er: Hvilke utfordringer kan oppstå i kommunikasjon mellom kurator og kunstner i utstillingsprosesser? I oppgaven evaluerer jeg kuratorrollen og kunstnerrollen i sammenheng med utdannelsesnivå og yrkeskompetanse. Min nysgjerrighet for kommunikasjon mellom kuratorer og kunstnere førte til utarbeidelse av 6 hypoteser som ble utgangspunktet for å fordype meg på et lite område i det norske kunstfeltet. Jeg ser på maktforhold mellom kuratorer og kunstnere i lys av Michel Foucaults teorier om makt og den kultursosiologiske tradisjonen etter Pierre Bourdieu. Det empiriske materialet er innhentet fra en digital spørreundersøkelse blant norske kuratorer og kunstnere, og fra intervju av 3 kunstnere og 3 kuratorer. Gjennom koding og kategorisering av empiri valgte jeg å analysere spørreundersøkelsen og intervjuer med søkelys på følgende 4 interesseområder: maktutøvelse, kunstinstitusjoners organisering, rolleforskyvninger og behovet for informasjon i utstillingssamarbeid. I drøftelsen av funn fra analysen vurderer jeg konkurransen mellom kunstnere og kuratorer om arbeidsoppgaver/-stillinger og det økende antall frilanskuratorer. Jeg kartlegger yrkesrollene jeg kaller kunstnerkurator og arrangørkunstner, og jeg drøfter utdanningsinflammasjon og yrkesrollenes informasjonsbehov. Avslutningsvis vurderer jeg om hypotesene er styrket eller svekket av empirien.

Summary
The master's thesis examines phenomena and challenges in communication between exhibition curators and contemporary artists. The thesis statement is: What challenges can arise in communication between curator and artist in exhibition processes? In my thesis, I evaluate the curatorial role and the role of the artist in the context of education level and vocational competence. My curiosity for communication between curators and artists led to the preparation of 6 hypotheses that became the starting point for immersing myself in a small area in the Norwegian art field. I look at power relations between curators and artists considering Michel Foucault's theories of power and the cultural sociological tradition of Pierre Bourdieu. The empirical material was obtained from a digital survey among Norwegian curators and artists, and from interviews of 3 artists and 3 curators. Through coding and categorization of empirical data, I chose to analyze the survey and interviews with a focus on the following 4 areas of interest: the exercise of power, the organization of art institutions, role shifts and the need for information in exhibition collaboration. In the discussion of findings from the analysis, I consider the competition between artists and curators for assignments/positions and the increasing number of freelance curators. I examine the professional roles I call artist curator and organizer artist, and I discuss educational inflammation and the professional roles' need for information. Finally, I consider whether the hypotheses have been strengthened or weakened by the empirical evidence.
