Background: Overweight and obesity has turned into a global health pandemic, with more than 650 million adults worldwide being classified as obese. There is a need for testing alternative hypothesis to tackle obesity, including the gut microbiota modulation by a diet. The main aim of this review was to investigate if the ratio between Prevotella and Bacteroides is affected by the type of diet consumed by an overweight or obese population. Methods: A search for English-language articles published in peer-reviewed journals was conducted from January 2010 through February 2023. Out of the 357 articles initially identified, 9 articles were included. Metadata were extracted from each article on publication year, country of study, population, study aims, methods, intervention diets and main findings. Results: From the nine articles included in our review, five were conducted in Scandinavian countries, with the rest being from United states and Asia. Four studies used whole grain as the intervention diet with the other five having intervention diets consist of different types of carbohydrates, high calcium intake, vegan diet, or a multifunctional diet. None of the interventions resulted in a statically significant change in Prevotella/Bacteroides ratio, but some shoved potential benefits for this ratio. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that diets could have a relatively small impact on Prevotella/Bacteroides ratio if Prevotella is already present before an intervention takes place. If subjects have no or low Prevotella prevalence before an intervention, then the diets do not seem to improve or encourage the colonization of Prevotella in the gut.
