This report is a master thesis, written in the fourth and last semester of the civil engineer program at the University of Agder. The master thesis studies and explores the current planning process in construction projects, The report is limited to only cover the planning practice in building projects. In a world and sector always evolving it is important to look at how companies can develop further and in this thesis the focus is on the project planning. The goal with the master thesis is to discover how projects are planned through investigation and interviews with different projects and find out how it can be improved. Therefore, the research question in the thesis is as followed: • How can project planning be developed further within building projects? The research question is followed by three sub questions to help answer it. To answer the research question different methods were used. To start of there was conducted a literature study through different areas to state a theory base to be used later. In cooperation with the extern supervisor from Skanska, there was produced a list with different methods and tools that are a normal practice in today’s projects. This list was then used to interview central persons involved in the planning process of the chosen projects. Further on main progress plans from the projects were collected. The different planning methods and tools used on projects were then discussed in regard to the main progress plans and the actual production. The conclusion of the master thesis is that the project planning phase can be developed further by increasing the knowledge around certain methods and tools and defining their purpose and application area. Doing this while also increasing the knowledge around digital planning tools can develop the project planning practice further.
