| dc.description.abstract | This master thesis addresses the topic of utility value of site investigations with ground penetrating radar in new road projects. The thesis aims to answer the following research question: How can site investigations with ground penetrating radar create utility value for both the project owner and the contractor?
To answer the research question, a literature study, a field investigation and five interviews were conducted. The theoretical basis was the principal of propagation of electromagnetic waves through the ground.
Literature about ground penetrating radar usage in Norway and at international level showed a tendency of usage in maintenance and rehabilitation. The interviews, however, showcased more usage of the ground penetrating radar when planning new projects.
In conclusion, the use of site investigations with ground penetrating radar can create utility value for both the project owner and the contractor in several ways. First, the identification of layers in the ground where there is uncertainty about the conditions will lead to better mass balance. Second, the risk attached to unforeseen changes in the conditions of the ground will be reduced and thereby the HSE will be strengthen. Third, the knowledge about layers and depth in the bedrock will be useful for both planning and execution of new projects. Fourth, the gap between drill points will be tightened.
Recommendations for future research emerged from the limitations of the study. Future research should include a discussion of the economical aspect of implementing the ground penetrating radar in site investigation. | |
