The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is well adapted in the Architectural Engineering and Construction (AEC) Industry and has already made a great impact in the industry. However, the adoption of BIM in existing buildings is lacking. In a time with global challenges like recourse scarcity, and climate change the knowledge for retrofitting, and refurbishment of existing structure will be a key measure in the pursuit of sustainable development. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to investigate how digital technologies and BIM can be implemented in existing buildings. This report aims to answer the following research question: How can the refurbishment of existing buildings be digitized by the implementation of building information modelling (BIM)? Through a case study and a systematic literature search, the results show that this can be done by digitally capturing a physical building by a laser scanner and then using the scan data for creation, development, and maintenance of a BIM model. However, there are few industry standards and best practices regarding the amount of reality capture and data processing that is needed to obtain a BIM for different use-cases. Scan-to-BIM is a manual and resource-intensive process that requires advanced laser scanners and competent users to efficiently digitize existing buildings. Therefore, it is difficult to know whether the benefits of digitalization are worth the costs of implementation.
