Sammendrag
Understanding how to create a sustainable world is a prominent focus in all aspects of society today. The growing concern about the consequences of human activity on the planet and the planet's resources has created a need to restructure and transform the way we think and act. For the business community, ESG has emerged as a new framework for understanding and measuring sustainability in companies. With the introduction of the Taxonomy in the EU, and several other new requirements for sustainability in companies, much remains to be understood about what a sustainable company is. This master's thesis uses a combination of action research and a qualitative single case study, as well as a systematic literature review on sustainability in business to explore how sustainability and ESG are related. This in an attempt to understand how companies can implement ESG as part of their basic strategy and vision in a high-tech VUCA world. The results from this study imply that sustainability in business is a complex and ambiguous concept as of today. Implementing sustainability in companies is about more than just the environment. Sustainability is about how companies view their employees, understand their impact on stakeholders, the way which companies are organized and structured, and the extent to which a company is able to respond to the needs of a world that is constantly changing. The study concludes by presenting a model for achieving sustainability through four dimensions of stakeholders; Planet, people, prosperity, and ethics. Further research should be concerned with understanding the feasibility of achieving sustainability in for-profit companies.
