Background: Patient education in the communities is often highlighted as a good way to secure early intervention against disease development, provide a better way to deal with disease and disability, and to ensure that patients are given the correct tools to ensure a good quality of life. One of the most common chronic diseases is type 2 diabetes, and it`s growing. Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate, critically assess and synthetize qualitative research-articles related to type 2 diabetes patient experiences with group-based education. Resarch-question: What are the experiences of participants with type 2 diabetes 2 after having participated in group-based patient education?
Methods: The qualitative metasynthesis include systematic search for literature in the databases Medline, Cinahl and Scopus. Relevant articles were identified by spesific criterias. 12 studies were included. The analyze was done according to guidelines by Aveyards thematic analyze. Results: The participants emphasized that knowledge about the disease, and how to handle the disease, is important. Feeling empowered, exchanging experiences with other people with the same challenges are valued. Acceptance of the disease and motivation are also important aspects. These factors contribute to increase coping of type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The metasynthesis indicated that patient education for people with type 2 diabetes is concidered a contributing factor in better coping with the disease, and to empower the patients to take action in their lives.
