This master thesis is a study of the function of fantastic literature, literary complexity, and didactic potential in two novels written by Jostein Gaarder. I have conducted a comparative analysis of the artistic breakthrough novel Kabalmysteriet(1990) and the author ́s last novel Anna: en fabel om klodens klima og miljø(2013). The subject renewal from 2020 has led to major upheavals in the Norwegian school, including the subject Norwegian and the students ́ encounter with fiction. The intention of this thesis has thus been to contribute to an expansion of the teacher ́s selection of fiction. As a result, my theoretical basis has been rooted in theories of literary complexity, the functions of fiction, and the educational ideal in school. The theoretical starting point led me into a three-part analysis that showed me the consequences of the differences between the chosen novels. Kabalmysteriethas dialogical structurethat helpsto highlight the intrinsic value of art. The meeting between reality and fantasycreates a distanced and harmless communication of life's difficult aspects. Anna, with a monological structure, stands as an educational instrument in the face of societal challenges. The didactic potential of the novels is consequently that the complexity, doctrinal conversations, and aesthetic value of Kabalmysterietcan contribute to a holistic formation in meeting school's ideals. Anna, on the other hand, stands as a novel with an instrumentalist perspective on societal challenges, which consequently contributes to a weakening of the novel's aesthetic value.
