The theme of this master's thesis is fantastic literature and sustainability. In the thesis, I analyze and interpret how new readings of fantasyliterature can contribute to the discussion of environmental and sustainability issues in the Norwegian subject. By studying three novels byAstrid Lindgren the thesis tries to investigate how fantasyliterature and material ecocriticism can add new readings. My motivation for writing this thesisis the increasing focus on sustainability in the Norwegian subject in school. The empirical material is Mio, min Mio(1954), Bröderna Lejonhjärta(1973) and Ronja Rövardotter (1981). They are selected from three different parts of Lindgren's authorship, and are particularly interesting because they do not obviously relate to issues of climate, environment and sustainability. The method I use in the thesis is close reading and comparative method. The analyzes show that all three novels contain several interesting readings, which can be used as a starting point for conversations in classrooms. As Ronja Rövardotter has previously been the subject of ecocritical readings, it is important for me to be able to contribute with new perspectives. Therefore, it is a crucial point that the thesis is based on the material ecocriticism, and especially what the fantasycontributesin terms of environmental and sustainability issues.
