University of Agder, Kristiansand.Sammendrag
The theme for this master's thesis is Sylvi Listhaug's involvement in the immigration debate that arises in connection with the refugee crisis in 2014/2015. I examine whether the debate has led to new or reinforced right-wing populist discourses on immigration and the extent to which these mayf unction as polarizing and exclusionary of immigrants. This thesis is a critical discourse analysis based on nine political texts by Listhaug, all of which represent a restrictive view of immigration. The analysis is based on Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model for critical discourse analysis, and contains analyses of social events, social practices and social structures. The analysis draws upon several theoretical perspectives, including theory of rhetoric, right-wing populism, theory about ideology, theory about text and genre, theory about pictures and composite texts, political theory and structuration theory. The method of the thesis is abductive and is based on a qualitative examination of text and discourse theory. Current social practices are understood in light of three right-wing populist discourses; the discourse of immigrants, the discourse of culture and cultural values, as well as the discourse of democracy. In addition, I also examine Listhaug`s texts as an expression of a media policy practice, with focus on Facebook as a media platform. In the linguistic analysis, I focus on wording through nouns, images, figures of speech and the use of pronouns. Furthermore, I analyze the texts by considering genre and style as constituent of the various discourses before I go on to discussing the social practices in terms of social structure.
