This masters thesis is a study of the relationship between man and nature in Knut Hamsun’s Growth of the soil(1917) and Gabriels Scott’s Markus –the fisherman(1918). The thesis can be placed withintheresearch fieldofEcocriticism. My intentions have been to illuminate ecocritical perspectives in norwegiannovels. This is based on recent ecocritical research and environmental ethics. My work is generally focused on the values that areexpressed trough the literature. The methodical approach consists of analysis, interpretation and comparison of the two novels. The idea of analyzing Growth of the Soil was formed on previous ecocritical readings of the novel. These previous studies have resulted in various conclusions. My study will be an addition to this discourse. My work on Markus –the Fisherman will on the other hand be a new impulse among Norwegian ecocritical studies. In the final results of this study I suggest that Markus –the Fishermanholds more significant ecocritical relevans, than Growth of the soil.nb_NO
