This master thesis is written in collaboration with Multiconsult and University of Agder. Earthquake design is a new field of study in Norway, and over the past decade it has become a part of rule and regulations to be considered during construction. This includes both new structures andrenovation of existing buildings. Thismayfor the construction companies require extra resources and difficulties, both economic wise and if there is lack of knowledge in earthquake design among their employees. In addition, the Eurocode 8-3is currently only available in English version. The aimof this thesis has been to create a simplified flowchart in accordance to Eurocode 8and the RIF document, that shows stepwise how documentation of earthquake design for existing buildings can be done.For a better understanding of the theory behind theearthquake design related to dynamics and the Eurocodes, an existing building in masonry from the 1900shas been modelled in Robot Structural Analysis (RSA). Where the more precise method, Modal-Seismic Analysis (MSA) has been used. The given building hasbeen studied and controlled for exclusion criteria and the occurring seismic loads before and after renovation. This has also been essential and a necessary guideline for the parameter studies done in this thesis. During this study it has been revealed that the studied building (existing and renovated) does not meet the requirements given for the exclusion criteria. Furthermore, it has been experienced during the parameterstudies that the ground type has a significant effect on the occurring seismic loads. It has been shown that upgrading form a type E to C gives a reduction in seismic load by approximately 15%.
