dc.description.abstractFor decades, Norwegian roads were constructed and planed by use of printout drawings. Today, as projects increase in scope and complexity, road construction has become a highly collaborative effort, with multiple disciplines working together to fulfil strict regulation requirements. It is due to this development that usage of digital tools in road and infrastructure engineering is more common. This master thesis takes a closer look at today’s possibilities in digital road construction design and on potential of expanding the usability by applying modern software development. Mainly, two separate cases have been investigated, a country road and a main highway, to explore opportunities in calculation of CO2-eq. emissions based of data available in respective 3D models. As a result, an application was developed that could be loaded into the design software, giving the user access to an extended control panel functionality. The user can rapidly calculate estimates for CO2-eq. emissions, energy use and cost based on the elements available in the model. Resulting data can then be stored, directly in the model, making it readily accessible for collaboration and/ or optimization. When comparing the developed application to traditional means of environmental impact assessment, a deviation of less than 4% was found. This suggest, given the constraints of this study, that such application of digital tools can be useful measure during planning and engineering phases of a road construction project. However, further work, development and research is required as there is a lack of project specific data.nb_NO
