Sammendrag
Abstract Ghana has enjoyed a relatively peaceful atmosphere since the turn of the republic. While other nations across the immediate borders of the country have experienced high levels of ethnic and political wars, the last 20 years in Ghana have been relatively peaceful. The study was built on achieving three main objectives in line with investigating factors that have accounted for the prolonged peace and security experienced in Ghana within the last two decades. The qualitative research approach was adopted to investigate this phenomenon. The study adopted the purposive sampling technique to sample a total of seventeen respondents from seven different organisations primarily concerned with peace and security in Ghana. Telephone interviews were used to collect data from the sampled participants. The study found that over the past 20 years, the Ministry of Defense has contributed most to long-term peace and security in Ghana. Since its inception, the ministry has been in charge of overseeing all facets of the country's defence, with an emphasis on both domestic and international threats. Due to the nationwide network of educational institutions, professionals now possess the skills and knowledge required to help resolve disputes. The findings further point to the fact Ghana has benefited from international initiatives spearheaded by the UN to resolve and lessen the impact of violent intra-national disputes, according to a study. The study also found that in Ghana, the media has been a crucial tool for getting anti-conflict messages out to the public. The study further found that religious groups and sects have helped to reduce violence in the nation over the past few centuries, especially in the northern areas of the country where conflicts are rife. One of the factors is a political system that works.
