Sammendrag
The purpose of the study was to define the characteristics of expert chairpersons in Norway. To be able to differentiate exceptional chairpersons from others, and thereby build good boards that can lead companies in the right direction. The study was conducted based on a gap in the research literature regarding what constitutes excellent chairpersons in Norway. The study was conducted using a qualitative method and hence (semi-structured) interviewed expert Norwegian chairpersons.The thesis 'contribution to research is related to the thesis' research question:What characterizes an expert Norwegian chairperson?
Results(1) The younger representatives are more motivated by monetary external factors, and the older ones are motivated by internal factors. (2) Experience is key to becoming an expert chairperson. (3) Economic, Financial, Risk Management and Corporate Governance are fundamental knowledge for a chairperson. (4) Empathy and social skills is crucial for being a good chairperson. (5) Norwegian chairpersons are not very formal, and they are more involved than other countries.
ConclusionDue to the lack of data, we cannot conclude this study. However, this study supplies indications of character traits in Norwegian chairpersons that can inspire further research. This study presents findings in character traits that deal with motivation, experience, knowledge, and emotional intelligence. In addition to findings that point out which characteristics may be peculiar to the Norwegian chairperson of the board.Chairperson; board; leadership; management; motivation; Norway; characteristics; cultural differences
