T Many seafarers have had their first encounter with seafaring life on board a school ship. A school ship course was a welcome offer for young boys who wantet to go to sea. This master thesis is related to the school ship movement; a movement that started in England in the late 18th century. The main focus in this assigment is the Norwegian school ship «Sørlandet». The school ship has its home port in the town of Kristiansand. The background for the construction of the school ship «Sørlandet» was a gift certificate from Kristiansand shipowner Oluf Andreas Tollefsen Skjelbred in 1918. In the letter he donates an amount of £ 25 000. The purpose was the construction of the school ship. This master thesis describes and explains the school ship «Sørlandet»`s history in the years from the gift certificate was given in 1918, and until the ship was completed in 1927. Then the school ships`s sailing years from 1927-1939 is described and explained. During the nine years from 1918-1927, international shipping developed to consist almost exclusively of steamships and motor ships. This master thesis explains, among other things, why it was nevertheless invested in seaman`s training on board a traditionally rigget sailing ship such as the school ship «Sørlandet» was built. There were many advantages to using sailing ships in a training context. The sailiing ships required a large crew, which in turn required a lot of the crew on board. As a result, the students developed many good qualities a sailor might need, qualities such as order, discipline, morality, cleanliness, responsibility and a sense of duty. This master thesis also explains all the thoughts and ideas that formed the basis for Skjeldbreds desire to give the city of Kristiansand a school ship for boys who wanted to go to sea. The findings of the thesis also shows that «Sørlandet» was both a product of the thoughts and ideas of the early school ship movement, but that the school ship also represented something completely new, among other thing because «Sørlandet» became the first Norwegian school ship to sail across the Atlantic. The school ship obtained state support to run a both theoretical and practical school on board for future sailors.
