Abstract

The theme of this master`s thesis is problems in digital meetings. The study is based on one physical and one digital meeting in a student association. I have done a quantitative comparison of the two meetings in order to investigate to what extent problems arise in the digital meeting compared to the physical meeting. In addition, I have studied excerpts of the digital meeting qualitatively using the method of conversation analysis to uncover how and why the problems arise, as well as how the participants handle these issues. The findings show that the problems usually occur due to challenges in turn-taking, which leads to long pauses or simultaneous talk. The quantitative comparison shows that the simultaneous talk and repair occur significantly more frequently in the digital meeting, compared to the physical one. I also found that the pauses lasted twice as long in the digital meeting. The conversation analysis found that the cause of the problems with long pauses and simultaneous talk mainly revolved around troubles with turn-taking, lack of addressing and the informal style of the meeting. In the conclusion, this master`s thesis claims that conducting video-meetings in a more formal way would make for less problems during the conversation
