The aim of this qualitative study was to obtain a better overview over the perceptions towards benefit realization in small online education projects, in the specialist health care services.Design/Methodology/ApproachThe study was based on two case projects involving online patient education. In total, 6 in-depth interviews were conducted, with 2 project managers and 4 project participants. The response from these interviews were then coded and categorized using Grounded Theoryto describe the most essential themes.FindingsThe vast majority of the literature on benefit realization is based on projects with moderate to large scopes, and there isvery little research on how realize benefits in smaller projects with tight constraints on resources. The findings from the interviews suggests that project members have limited experience and knowledge with benefit realization, and sees it as an administrative hurdle that diverts their focus away from the actual content production. This suggests that the current framework for benefit realization is not properly adapted for smaller projects, and that it can lead to extensive administration while only adding limited benefit.Research implicationsDue to the nature of qualitative research, it is difficult to generalize the results produced in this study. There is a suggestion to examine this topic using quantitative methods in order to produce more generalizable results.Originality/ValueIn spite of the academic interest for benefit realization in the Western society, there is a lack of research on the number of projects that actually follow this methodology. This study supplements the literature by examining the attitudes toward benefit realization on a project level. KeywordsBenefits management, perception, attitude, experience, projectnb_NO
