In this analysis I have investigated and discussed the presuppositions for communication in a psycriatic unit within a public health facility from the staffs perspective. I have examined the physical limits and surroundings, the roles, relationships, context and communicative skills based on a functional approach, since the social and cultural aspects were significant to complete the analysis of the communicative phenomenon. I used qualitative method because I wanted to explore the phenomenom thoroughly and achieve as much relevant information as possible. The empirical data was based on observation and interviews of a strategic choice of healthcare staff at a medium sized hospital in Norway. My assignment was to examine how the staff consieved their own and the patients ability to communicate. The goal was to identify the communicative elements that enhanced the ability to connect and communicate, by analyzing and summerice before discussing the empirical material, and finally I will try to present some abstractions which may prove as a final result that may be useful in similar contexts and challenges, in reguards to physical, asymmetrical relations and roles within a restricted area.no_NO
