The purpose of the present study was to scope out research describing female athletes’ experiences and perceptions in sport coaching practices. Three major databases were searched (SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, and MEDLINE) for studies conducted on a female-only population, published from 1980 to 2022, in academic journals. The search resulted in 127 studies, with data provided by 12 164 female athletes on their experiences and perceptions of sport coaching practices (e.g., coach behaviors and communication, leadership style, coach-created motivational climate). Results revealed that (a) 62.2% of the included studies did not provide a description of coaches; (b) 63% of all included studies were conducted on athletes competing on a national level or higher, and (c) only 6.3% of all studies collecting data from female athletes on their experiences and perceptions on sport coaching practices focused specifically on athletic development. The present scoping review has two aims. First to map out and describe female athletes’ experiences and perceptions of sport coaching practices. Secondly, we aim to use the findings to discuss potential coaching needs specific to female athletes. Finally, we provide guidance for sport practitioners and future research on sport coaching practices for female athletes.
