dc.description.abstract | Background: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effect of local anesthesia with lidocaine via a “needle-free” device, given prior to intravenous cannulation in pediatric patients, compared to lidocaine cream (Emla®). This study also examined the application time for the effect of needle-free lidocaine, compared to lidocaine cream. The success of cannulation was also examined. Methods: The design of this paper is a systematic review. Studies included were searched for in databases for nursing research with the help of a librarian. Included studies was screened and their quality was controller by checklists. Results from the included studies were made into a narrative analysis. Results: The results from the search in databases were 532 studies. 173 duplicated were removed. 22 studies were read in full text, and 8 of these studies were included. All studies were randomized controlled studies. The studies showed that lidocaine via a needle-free system provided pain reduction 1–10 minutes prior to intravenous cannulation. The application time was lower when a needle-free device was used for giving lidocaine to the injection site. There was no difference in success of cannulation between needle-free lidocaine and lidocaine cream. Conclusion: Lidocaine given to pediatric patients via a needle-free system provides good analgesic effect and pain reduction during intravenous cannulation in this patient group. This method of giving lidocaine is more time effective than the use of lidocaine cream. Success of cannulation is not improved with the use of lidocaine with a needle-free system compared to lidocaine cream. | en_US |
