Background In Norway there are expectations of further development and strategic investment in information technology within the health care system. Persons who undergo a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery are in need of information and guidance related to problems that may arise after they have returned home from hospital. Purpose The purpose of this project was to explore to what extent digital communication solutions might meet the need for information and guidance from health personnel experienced by patients who had undergone a CABG surgery, after discharge from the specialist hospital. Additionally, it was important to examine possible side effects of introducing digital communication solutions from the patients’ home. Sample and methods The sample contained all CABG surgery patients in 2015 at one specialist hospital in Norway. A web based questionnaire was sent to 309 eligible patients, and 197 (64%) responded. The questionnaire included demographic information and questions about how digital communication systems could meet the patients need for information and guidance after discharge to own home. Results A total 67% of the respondents meant that digital communication systems, to a large degree, would cover the need for information and guidance after discharge from the specialist hospital. Additionally, 81% of the respondents answered that it is socioeconomic benefit to communicate with health personnel from home, and 67%were motivated to use a network based video solution to communicate with the health personnel at the specialist hospital from home. Conclusion Patients who have undergone a CABG surgery are motivated to use various digitalcommunication systems to communicate with health personnel at the specialist hospital from their home. This might contribute to patient participation for promoting their rehabilitation pathway. patients an opportunity to participate more in their own rehabilitation stream.
