Aim: In USA it was postulated that up to 98000 people died because of medical error eachyear and that the cause is human failure that include non-technical skills as communicationand interaction between health personnel. Studies from Norway show the same patterns. Theinterest for non-technical skills within teamwork has an increased focus in a way to increasepatient safety. The aim with this study is to find what quality it is on teamwork in Norwegianemergency department. Background: None clinical studies are found regarding quality on teamwork in emergencydepartment. Many studies measure quality on teamwork while simulating a patient case. Allstudies found are focused on teamwork and team leadership working around the most criticaland/or injured patient. This study becomes important to be able to survey teamwork and teamleadership around all patients in the emergency department. Methods: Thirty team was observed in the period between august and September 2013. Astandard observation form ”Team Emergency Assessment Measure (TEAM)” that isdeveloped to score teamwork was used. Two observers observed the same teams at the sametime and scored independently. Results are shown through descriptive, mean, standarddeviation and present. Analyses used are ANOVA, Independent samples t-test, correlationPearson, Spearman’s rank and Cronbach alpha and Interclass Coeffient (ICC).Results: The quality on teamwork shows weak results. Divided in different team typemedicine, neurologic and surgical/orthopedic there is no significant difference in qualitylevel. Triage code red/orange shows significant stronger quality level than triage codeyellow/green in total and divided in all domains leadership, teamwork and task management.Overall score shows the same pattern. Divided in domain leadership shows the weakestquality level. Leadership was not visible in most of the medical and neurological teams in5triage code yellow/green. Teamwork scores bellow midpoint while task management showsthe highest quality level in all team types and triage codes. Conclusion: The quality level in teamwork in the emergency department showed significant weak results.nb_NO
