The Kandyan Forest Gardens (KFGs) Has been a basis for not only the stable agricultural livelihood of the community living in Tropical hills of Sri Lanka but also for the maintenance of biodiversity and equilibrium of the environment in these regions for an excitedly long period. Over the last several decades various social, economic and political changes have been brought about in these KFGG. The direct cause behind the above modifications was the forest conservation and management policies implemented in the area in question. These policies were put into effect with a view to keeping the peripheral community away from the forest yet without success. Those who made such policies were not mindful of thoughts, aspirations and the lifestyle of the community. This study tries to identify the potential KFGs have as a means of protecting the forest and their biodiversity on the one hand and by using the same as a community management approach for the development of the community. The village Meeumre lying in the middle of the Knuckles Range is the study area of this research and a methodology of both quality and quantity has been used to achieve its objective. The conclusion we can arrive at through the results of the study is that it is the KFGs have a rich potential, and people living in these peripheral villages should be mobilized for the conservation. To accomplish this task the community forest management approach will be an excellent medium. It will not only enable maintain the agriculture based livelihood of the community sustainably but also will contribute to the management of the forest in a more fruitful way. It is a realization of the concept of sustainable development at a regional level.no_NO
