Abstract
This thesis looks at gender equality and gender representation in a school context, and specifically through an analysis of Norwegian school textbooks in English at the middle school level. Elements from Fairclough's three-dimensional model and discourse analysis have been used as inspiration for the implementation of this analysis. Nine school textbooks written for the current curriculum have been analyzed through the same form to address any stereotypical representations within the representation of emotional expressions, hobbies and occupations. In addition, factors such as ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation and use of images have been included in the analysis. The results show that the school textbooks largely demonstrate the ability to equal gender representation, but there are still cases of gender stereotypes present in the texts.
