Abstract
In this master thesis will it has been analysed how the Norwegian public throughout the cold war redacted to Soviet Union`s invasion of Hungary 1956, Czechoslovakia 1968 and Afghanistan 1979. The purpose of this thesis is to look at how the Norwegian public trough the lens of the media presented and reacted to the different invasion, and to see if there was a continuity or break in how the different invasions was represented in the Norwegian public. To answer this question this master thesis will focus on how to the different newspapers in Norway reacted to the different invasions and to also see if there is a similarity or difference to how they presented the invasion through the cold warWhen it comes what method and theory that has been used for this thesis is both qualitative and comparative method. The reason for the use of qualitative was to analyse how the different newspapers presented the different Soviet invasions. The reason for use of comparative method was to analyse the different newspapers representation between each other’s when it comes to each invasion. The second one is to compare the newspapers up against every invasion to se if there is any difference or similarities throughout the cold war. This thesis has used the two theoretical perspectives realism and idealism to analysis this paper. When it comes to the sources that has been used to this thesis it mainly focuses on newspapers, and it has used five different newspapers, that can be linked to different political parties in Norway. Starting from the political left to right of the newspapers is Friheten, Orietnering/Ny Tid, Arbeiderbladet, Aftenposten and Dagbladet. There has been both a continuity and break in how the newspapers presented the Soviet union’s invasions. Thought the different Soviet invasions there have been both a continuity and a break between all the newspaper’s presentation of the tree Soviet invasions.
