What really happened in Kautokeino in 1852? This question has been treated by a number of researchers, authors and contributors who together have formed what we might call the history of the Kautokeino uprising. A question which has not previously been addressed is how to understand the dramatic events when considering political culture, contentious politics and the Nordic model. In this thesis I will link political moral norms, or political culture, to the Sami patterns of reaction and action in contrast to the already established historiography, which maintains a main perspective where superior ethnic Norwegians have acted as cynical oppressors of the Sami. In this thesis I refer to examples of how the causes of the uprising have been treated previously, but with a new approach. How do rebellion traditions, changing and at times fixed political moral norms, and an increasingly important indigenous debate affect the aftermath of the Kautokeino incident-and vice versa? I will account for some well-regarded sources, as well as taking some alternative perspectives into account, in order to consider what kind of political culture prevails in the uprising. In other words, I am mainly concerned with the causes and effects of the Kautokeino uprising and hope the analysis can contribute to the debate about the causes and effects of the shocking event in Finnmark almost 170 years ago.en_US
