In this master’s thesis I analyzeNaja Marie Aidt’s elegyhar døden taget noget fra digså giv det tilbage. Carls bog(2017)as reactionto the author’s personal loss experience and literary presentation of a grief process.I read the book and analyze its form and content to show how the literary work is constructed. It turns out that Carls boghas the fragment structure as one of its main characteristics. We find it both in the outer form, that is, in the composition of the work and variation in typography, and on an inner level, in different text types, narrative voices and intertextual references.Furthermore, I placethe work into the elegygenre, defined by form and content on one side, and the elegiac as affective mode on the other side. I use theoretical considerations about elegy and the elegiac by Theodore Ziolkowski, Morton W. Bloomfield, Gregory Nagy, Klaus Weissenberger and Ane Martine Kjær Lønneker. Through its topics, that is loss, grief and lamentation, Carls bogcan be linked to the traditional definition of the genre based on itscontent. In addition, the work can be assigned to the elegiac, because the work originates from personal, mixed sensationsand is so a reactionto the author’s loss experience, which the text mediates through form and content to the reader.Grief theory can be used to elucidate the grief process that ispresented through form and content of the text. Sigmund Freud, John Bowlby, J. William Worden and Margaret Stroebe and Henk Schut have developed approaches that in their inequality reveal a broad spectrum of aspects of grief and grief processes. I have found that the griefprocess presented in Aidt’s book contains elements from all the grief theories that my contextualisation is based on. At the same time, the elegy both expresses how the writing has contributed to a positive development of the grief process, and testifies the complexity of the personal grief process, consisting of loss orientation and restitution, as current grief theory states.nb_NO
