The summer of 2018 was exceptionally warmboth in Norway and internationally. The persistent heat and the many temperature records led toserious consequences, and the Norwegian media eventually named the summer of 2018 “the record summer”and “the extreme summer”. This master's thesis aimsto elucidate how theunusualsummer weatherwas presentedin theNorwegian newspapers during the summer months. The thesis offers a critical discourse analysis of various representations of “the record summer” and “the extreme summer” in the ten largest Norwegian newspapers throughout the summer of 2018. It is based on an interdisciplinary theoretical framework by combining perspectives on critical discourse analysis with perspectives from mediastudiesand journalism. Through a two-part analysis, a quantitative overview of the material is first given before the newspaper articlesare discussed through differentdiscourses about the summer weather. The analysis uncoversfour discourses about the summer weather:the economic discourse, the concernedclimate discourse, the optimistic consumer discourseand the sensational weatherdiscourse. Within the economic discourse, the summer weather is first and foremost seen in relationto economic growth, while inthe concernedclimate discourse it is seen asa warning of an uncertainfuture. Within the optimistic consumer discourse, the summer weather is seen in relation to our consumption pattern and is partly used as a commercial strategy. Finally, the sensational weatherdiscourse presents the summer weather as aunique phenomenon that wehave never encounteredbefore. The analysis shows that the two first discourses are the most widespread and reveals adiscursive struggle between an economic perspective and a climate perspective on the summer weather in the Norwegian newspapers. The thesis examinesthis relationship critically and placesthe coverage of the summer weather into a climate context by discussing the concerned climate discourse in light of the public debate on climate change.
