Diagnostic pathology is essential for diagnosing cancer and often also in guiding choice of treatment method. However many claim it has become a bottleneck within cancer treatment, due partly to the fact that the number of pathologists is not expanding in line with the increasing workload. Digital pathology (DP) is considered to be the solution for increased efficiency within the field of pathology. The implementation of health information systems is complex and involves technical, human and organisational aspects, and information systems of all types have consistently failed to deliver expected gains. In this study it was chosen to look at the factors pathologists view of greatest importance when implementing DP. A quantitative method was used with a semi-structured questionnaire as data collection tool. This was sent to the members of The Norwegian Society of Pathology. The key concerns of the sampled pathologists were mainly system quality and organisational matters. DP must work and give the right information at the right time. In addition the organisation must facilitate a good way of using and implementing DP. In general the pathologists in the sample held very positive views towards DP.The results of the survey can give the impression that technological and human factors are less challenging than the organisational factors. However, examining the results and literature also show it is a very complex problem and there are a lot of elements that affect each other within and across the technological, human and organisational aspects. Keywords: digital pathology, implementation, health information system, technological factors, humanfactors, organisational factors, success factorsnb_NO
