Introduction: The construction industry is undergoing constant changes and the complexity of today’s buildings is increasing. Simultaneously, there is a constant pressure to deliver projects faster and cheaper, without sacrificing quality. Lean construction is a philosophy that seeks to reduce waste, create flow and improve plan-reliability in construction projects. This master thesis is written in collaboration with Skanska, investigating the possibilities of location-based planning and flowoptimization in the interior works of the Bjørndalen KF5 residential project, using an interdisciplinary approach. Methodology: The study is based upon mixed methods, combining both qualitative and quantitative approach. Open structured interviews with craftsmen and project managers formed the qualitative, whilst an optimization exercise in the software Vico Office, formed the quantitative part. Result: Prerequisites and sources of waste are identified for all activities included in the scope, along with general means to reduce waste and strengthen flow of construction projects. Location-based scheduling, performed in Vico, shows the potential for optimizing the project flow using locations and levelling of activities. Discussion and Conclusion: Findings in this report indicate that using craftsmen’s knowledge and experience more frequently in designing, planning and implementing can help reducing waste and improve flow in construction projects. Two main approaches to reducing waste is suggested, where one is securing preconditions and the other facilitating projects that creates less waste. Furthermore, it is shown that location-based scheduling can provide better project flow by visualizing the use of locations with respect to time and provide the possibility to optimize this.nb_NO
