Abstract
The basis of this master thesis is the new planned «Knubben» harbor bath in Arendal. The architectsfrom Snøhetta had decided to build the construction in white concrete. White concrete is curently amaterial that is not widely used compared «traditional» gray concrete. The construction is plannedlocated in the harbor basin close to Arendal and will therefore be exposed to a harsh environment.There are therefore strict requirements to the concrete to ensure structural integrity and reducedeterioration. It is therefore interesting to see whether the durability of the white concrete similarto gray concrete of same quality. The following research question has been formulated:How are the durability properties of white concrete compared to gray concrete in the same strengthclass?The white and gray concrete is produced in the construction lab at UiA. The main focus is to testthe deterioration mechanism frost/deterioration. The freeze/thaw resistance of white concrete iscompared to gray concrete. The following test method is used: SN-CEN/TS 12390-9:2016. Testinghardened concrete — Part 9: Freeze-thaw resistance with de-icing salts — ScalingThe results show that the durability of the concrete is dependent on several factors. The resultsfrom the freeze/thaw- test can not sufficiently answer the research question. The findings of thisthesis prove that there is insufficient basis to conclude on the white concrete durability compared togrey «traditional» concrete, due to inadequate scaling test results defined per the standard.iv
