Denne avhandlingen undersøker to virksomheters Facebook-innlegg i løpet av en periode på fire uker, ved hjelp av fire metoder: kvantitativ og kvalitativ innholdsanalyse, tekstanalyse og kvalitativt intervju. Hensikten er å avdekke hvilke budskapsstrategier som brukes og hvor mye engasjement de skaper, hvordan bedriftene henvender seg til publikum og hvordan retoriske appellformer kommer til uttrykk. Mange ledere av små bedrifter gjør mye av markedsføringen selv, uten profesjonell hjelp. Det er derfor et målat avhandlingen skal ha en rådgivende funksjon, og at funnene skal gi bedriftsledere kunnskap og inspirasjon til å forbedre kommunikasjonen i sosiale medier. Oppgavens teoretiske grunnlag baserer seg på teori om blant annet identitet og omdømmebygging, merke-forbruker-relasjoner, message strategy, sosiale medier og retorikk. Deler av analysen er inspirert av Tafesse og Wiens (2017a) rammeverk for kategorisering av Facebook-poster. Funnene viser at den transformative budskapsstrategien skaper mest engasjement. Å være personlig og menneskelig i Facebook-poster kan styrke de vennskapelige relasjonene mellom bedriften og forbrukerne, noe som kan bidra til økt engasjement i sosiale medier og på lengre sikt styrke omdømmet. Analysen antyder også at den selgende strategien med pris som hovedargument er mindre effektiv når målet er å styrke relasjonene med følgerne og øke engasjement. Avhandlingen gir et grundig innblikk i hvordan virksomheter kommuniserer på Facebook, noe som kan skape økt bevissthet rundt hvilke strategier og virkemidler som er mest hensiktsmessige for å bygge bro mellom forbrukerens og bedriftens behov.
