The goal of this study was to look at the relationship between autonomy in the shape of self-governance in the workplace and sickness absence andthe research question for this thesis states “Is there a relationship between autonomy and sickness absence”. A systematic literature review was conducted to examine what previous research had found about this relationship and this was to be compared to the findings made from a questionnaire at a Norwegian hospital. The questionnaire was done in 2013 by employees with more than a 30% position and contained demographic, working conditions, family situation and their own experienced health. (N=5272) wherein 36% responded. This yielded in 1864 valid responses. The questionnaire was combined with registered sickness absence data from 2014. SPSS (version 25) was used to do a factor analysis, a correlation analysis as well as a regression analysis to examine the research question and control for age, gender and education. The analysis indicates that there is a relationship between autonomy and sickness absence (b-,105), as well as a relationship between gender and sickness absence (b,049), however no significant effect was found between education level and sickness absence.
