Background: Sleep is important for both recovery and performance during training. Previous studies about sleep and performance are usually excecuted within competition periods, and measured by one or two of the three instruments Sensewear, Philips or PSQI.Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the questionnaire PSQI and the activity measure Sensewear with the Philips' goal of sleep, to investigate whether young top athletes have the recommended amount of sleep and whether there is a link between sleep and performance.Method: A total of 17 young top athletes participated in this study. To register the amount of sleep the instruments Sensewear and Philips were used in a 7-day period. PSQI was used to register sleep for one month. Tested performance variables were VO2max, maximum strength and responsiveness. Results: Philips and Sensewear where correlated significantly p <0.05 and p <0.01 when measuring sleep quantity and rest. The measure of sleep efficiency showed a significant difference p <0.001. Philips showed a significant negative correlation between sleep quantity measured against VO2maxand maximum strength p <0.05. Philips and PSQI showed no correlation between sleep quantity and responsiveness. The PSQI showed that those who experienced good sleep performed better. Conclusion: Sensewear matches Philips measuring sleep quantity and rest, but when measuring sleep efficiency, the instruments disagree. The PSQI did not match Philipsmeasuring sleep quantity, rest and sleep efficiency. The sleeping habits did not meet the requirement of the National Sleep Foundation at 8-10 hours. The correspondence between sleep and performance showed disagreementbetween Philips and PSQI.Keywords:Sleepquantity, Philips, Sensewear, PSQI, recovery.
