During the last few years, Kristiansand Port has had a decline in its roro-traffic which is the definition of wheeled cargo carried by vessels designed for such. In this thesis, we explain what happenings might have caused this decline in traffic. International trade has increased significantly in recent years, which has resulted in increased import and export in Norway. This means that we need to create more environmentally friendly modes of transport and relieve the road network. This master thesis therefore also deals with the advantages and barriers associated with maritime transport as well as how we can transfer more freight from road to sea. We explain the importance of increasing the transport through seaways, as well as the environmental factors that are involved. Some relevant stakeholders are briefly mentioned, while the port of Kristiansand has an in-depth focus. We also mention some earlier and new funding projects that help stimulate transmission from road to sea. The theoretical basis for the analysis part of the thesis is based on previous research, such as the research project called GodsFergen in addition to research articles which have been published. There are mainly changes in Kristiansand which are discussed, as this is where there has been noticed a decline the last few years. We have investigated this through a quantitative method, by trying to understand whether this can be only a coincidence or if an event can be the explanatory reason for the changes. We analyse those happenings which the ports believe may be the cause by using a regression analysis. According to the results, only the happenings that are directly linked to the port of Kristiansand have affected the decline in traffic, such as new offers at sea and introduction to new vessels. Moving goods from road to sea requires a qualitative analysis where we use SWOT to analyse advantages and disadvantages regarding the concept. In addition to this, we include three scenarios here to underline the results from the SWOT-analysis. Here we focus on imports and exports in Norway, and have therefore contacted Norwegian stakeholders. The results show that to move more goods from road to sea, the prices need to be reduced, the infrastructure needs to improve as well as the routines within loading and unloading of goods in the ports needs to increase in efficiency.nb_NO
